Retro Cocktail Party : Deck the Halls with Cats Like Us

(Shag Art www.shag.com)
Tis' the season for festive tidings in the forms of caroling, cookie baking and overall spreading holiday cheer. Now spreading holiday cheer is a personal favorite activity of mine, especially when 'holiday cheer' is in the form of a delicious cocktail along side a plethora of dips, chips and things covered in cheese. Mmmmm, cheese. Celebrate the holiday season with a retro-esque themed cocktail party and Cats Like Us is just the place to help add that extra 'HO' in your 'HO-HO-HO' all the way to the punch bowl. Did someone say I have a one track (liquored up) mind? Well stagger along with me to get some ideas on how to start planning for your reindeer games!

Set the Mood:
Think of going back to simpler times before TV's ruled the living room, there were no such thing as cell phones and when a party was all about conversation, playing records and indulging in finger foods and potent cocktails. Invite your guests to dress up in the retro 50s theme, ladies could dress in cocktail length dresses and gentleman could sport their nicest suit coat or even a formal dinner jacket. Dress to the nine's, the sky is the limit!
Decorations:
Keep it simple! If you're not normally a retro décor enthusiast, there is no need to run out and buy items that will break your bank. Simple Chinese lanterns, string lights, mini tinsel trees and garland are sure to turn your house into a retro winter wonderland. Choosing paper napkins, plates and table settings with snowflakes, whimsical Santa Claus' or reindeer will add that extra kitsch to your kitsch-mas cocktail party.
Food:
This is the time of the year to throw that diet out the window and enjoy some holiday decadence. Treat your guests to some nibbles while keeping the menu simple. Serve; cocktail wieners, a fruit filled Jello mold, homemade cheese ball with assorted crackers, deviled eggs, etc. You would make Betty Crocker proud with that food spread!
The perfect retro hostess serves her guests in an apron (don't want to get messy splatters on your party dress!), slip on the Bowl of Cherries Half Apron by Warning and protect your mitts with the Cherries Pot Holder by Cupcake Provocater.
Cocktails:
Oh, my favorite parts of the party! I'm sure a lot of you don't have an unlimited supply of booze bursting from your cabinets (sigh, a girl can dream), so plan your drink menu according to a few recipes such as a signature martini. Once again, think simple and don't let over complicated drinks that hinder the flow of serving your guests.
A few cocktail recipes from www.mr-booze.com
Classic Martini
2 1/2 Ounces Gin. If you prefer Vodka, then substitute
3/4 Ounces of dry Vermouth
Shake the two together in a big beautiful shaker with enough chipped ice to make the drink thick with cold. Pour generously into a big piece of classic stemware and sink a couple fat Spanish Olives.
Whiskey Sour
2 Ounces of Rye or Bourbon
1 Ounce of lemon juice
1 teaspoon powered sugar
Shake ingredients in a shaker 'til ice-cold. Strain drink into old fashioned glass. Sink an orange slice and a maraschino cherry into it.
Maui Christmas
1 1/2 Ounces Triple Sec
1 Ounce White Creme de Cacao
3 1/2 Ounces pineapple juice
1 Tablespoon coconut flakes
Blend everything together in a blender with crushed ice. Plop a big maraschino cherry on top and dust with a little more coconut.
Don't forget the bar swag for your retro cocktail party!

Of course no cocktail party would be complete without a cocktail dress and something for the gent of the household......

So, have yourself a merry lil' kitsch-mas cocktail party! The Cats Like Us gang and myself hope you drink responsibly and (of course) share with us! *wink*

Happy Holidays!!!!
XOXO,
~Meagan Kyla
